SWOT Analysis

1.Program SWOT Analysis

Academic, educational and management activities of the Department of Public Administration were examined and the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the department were evaluated. The following criteria were taken into consideration when making the evaluation;

  • Education-training activities,
  • 8 Semester course plan,
  • Course names and contents,
  • Course requirements,
  • Structuring an effective career planning,
  • Opportunities for students to transfer to master's and doctoral programs,
  • Evaluation of academicians,
  • Student/academic communication,
  • Support units.

1.1.Strengths of the Program

 

  • The department is located in Biga, the largest district of Çanakkale,
  • Proximity to Bandırma and Gönen, which are the major districts of Balıkesir province,
  • Doğtaş, IÇTAŞ, Dardanel etc. proximity to brands, industry and trade networks,
  • The presence of academic staff with the necessary competence in the field,
  • Academicians have the capacity to produce qualified works about their subjects,
  • Academicians have the potential to produce qualified projects about their subjects,
  • Academic staff should have sufficient formation in transferring information to students,
  • Ensuring that the student communication of the academic staff is at the desired level,
  • The communication of academic staff with administrative staff should be at the desired level,
  • Administrative staff student communication should be at the desired level,
  • Regular meetings of the department should be held at least once per semester,
  • Planning of the department's courses is carried out regularly before each semester according to the expertise of the faculty members,
  • Encouraging the diversification of department courses according to the expertise of faculty members and current developments,
  • The physical location of the department and the availability of access to information resources at the technological infrastructure point are appropriate,
  • The presence of sports fields, cafeteria, entertainment center, etc. areas that will allow students to spend extracurricular time on campus, and OSYM application office, ATM, etc. units that will meet the needs of students,
  • COMU has the largest and most comprehensive library in the region,
  • Prof. Dr. Ramazan Aydın Campus has a library that is large enough to meet the needs of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences,
  • To provide instant access to online resources and databases with the username and password given to our students for off-campus access to the library,
  • Strong participation in management and consideration of proposals,
  • Blackboard, projection, etc. in each classroom. availability of lesson assistance tools,
  • Having a conference room and a computer laboratory,
  • Students have the opportunity to establish a student club and organize in the subjects they want,
  • The fact that students have been actively enrolled in the Master's Program with Thesis since 1995, the Master's Program without Thesis since 2003 and the doctoral program since 2010.

 1.2.Weaknesses of the Program

  • ​Failure of Biga Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Department of Public Administration to adequately introduce prospective students,
  • Lack of institutional continuity in the efforts of all academic and administrative staff to act as a whole on the same issues in order to ensure qualified institutionalization,
  • The inability to adequately use the potential performance of employees due to the lack of adequate ownership of the corporate vision within the faculty and physical conditions,
  • The fact that some teaching staff do not master the current legislation and avoid responsibility,
  • Failure to allocate equipment such as office, fixtures and consumables effectively,
  • Lack of multidisciplinary and collaborative work,
  • Lack of realization of scientific or industrial oriented projects and inclusion of students in them,
  • Students do not know enough foreign languages and therefore the necessary attention has not been paid to programs such as Fulbright, Erasmus,
  • Due to the reasons mentioned above, the faculty has not been able to provide the necessary international contacts and agreements at an adequate level, especially in areas related to social sciences,
  • Apart from textbooks, the resources for current practice from different sectors should not be used by every faculty member,
  • Students or faculty members do not show the necessary sensitivity about the internship,
  • Having a large number of courses opened with a minimum number of students due to the excess of elective courses,
  • Inability to implement career development programs at the desired level within the faculty and department,
  • Not providing sufficient economic support to academic staff in international studies,
  • Low participation in technical trips, congresses, symposiums, fairs for students and academics,
  • Students, especially senior students, are not sufficiently motivated to attend classes due to the stress of country-wide exams such as KPSS.

1.3.Opportunities

 

  • The cooperation with the faculties in the city center of ÇOMU will be further developed,
  • The fact that cooperation can be made with Bandırma Onyedi Eylul University, which is close in distance to Biga, and the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge which is activated in 2022 will diversify and improve the existing transportation network of the faculty,
  • Taking concrete steps towards becoming a Research University of ÇOMU,
  • To have a research assistant who will finish his doctoral studies in the next few years.​

 

1.4.Threats

 

  • In the future, the department of Public Administration of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of Çanakkale Onsekiz March University Biga will be less preferred by students;
  • The existence of a similar department called Political Science and Public Administration within the Faculty of Political Sciences at Terzioğlu Campus, which is located in the provincial center of Çanakkale Onsekiz March University,
  • The existence of the Department of Public Administration at Bandırma Onyedi University, which is located about an hour from Biga.
  • The decrease in the competence level of the campus and the facilities located on the campus to meet the changing and developing student expectations and needs.

With the relocation of Biga MYO's to the Prof. Dr. Ramazan Aydın campus, the number of students on campus will increase,

The cooperation with the faculties in the city center of ÇOMU will be further developed,

In the future, the department of Public Administration of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of Çanakkale Onsekiz March University Biga will be less preferred by students;

The fact that cooperation can be made with Bandırma Onyedi September University, which is close in distance to Biga,,

   

 

 

Taking concrete steps towards becoming a Research University of ÇOMU,

Having a research assistant who will finish his doctoral studies in the next few years,

The existence of the Department of Public Administration at Bandırma Onyedi Eylul University, which is located about an hour from Biga.

Negative impact of campus life as a result of the decrease in secondary education students,

The decrease in the competence level of the campus and the facilities located on the campus to meet the changing and developing student expectations and needs.

The fact that the department is not attractive for students due to the absence of any difference between graduates of the faculty of Open Education and Decedents of other faculties
